Best Czech Movies Ever Made

Each country in the world has its own famous movies as well as famous actors. When it comes to cinematography, there are so many exceptional movies made over time that we would probably need another life to watch them all. However, we will show you in this article some of the best Czech movies ever made. Check them out and see if you fancy any of them.

Faust
Faust was released in 1994 and its director was Jan Svankmajer. The movie includes claymation as well as puppetry, and the main role is played by Petr Cepek. Faust doesn’t relate to the legend of Faustus, but it actually borrows and blends various elements from the story. In plus, it features elements of Absurdism and Modernism and a Kafkaesque atmosphere. The film was shot in charming Prague and the tone is quite dark and humorous. There is also an English version with voices provided by Andrew Sachs. Faust has been chosen as the Czech entry for the Best Foreign Language Movie, but unfortunately has not been accepted as a nominee.

Ikarie XB 1
Ikarie XB 1 was released in 1963, and thanks to the director, Jindrick Polak and its professional team, it has been a real success. There are without a doubt lots of things to love about this movie. The story is very interesting and the entire action takes place in the future, in 2163 to be more precise. The name of the movie is actually the name of the starship from the movie, which embarks on a long journey across the entire Universe in order to search for life on the planets of Alpha Centauri. You must definitely watch the movie in case you haven’t done it yet. We are sure that you will absolutely love the Czech production, which is considered by critics one of the best Czech movies ever made.

Daisies
Daisies is also another old movie but highly appreciated these days as well. It was released in 1966, before the Prague Spring, and the director was Vera Chytilova. Daisies is a lovely comedy-drama that was made with the support of a state-sponsored film studio. The film follows two teenage girls, both with the same name, who engage in some strange pranks. The roles are played by actresses Ivana Karbanova and Jitka Cerhova. A very interesting fact about this movie is that it was actually banned at the beginning due to the fact that the Czech authorities labeled it as ”depicting the wanton”. However, Daisies got the prestigious Grand Prix of the Belgian Film Critics Association.

Even though there are people who would say that the Czech Republic doesn’t have too much to offer in terms of cinematography, this is certainly not true. There are lots of amazing movies made by Czechs and that received various awards over time. We have only shown you a few in this article, but if you do some online research you will definitely find many more. However, we strongly recommend you to watch at the least the ones we mentioned in our article. You will not regret it.
